$3,250 donation to Manitou Springs Schools

The Manitou Springs School District 14 recently received a $3250.00 Kiwanis grant to purchase a new “tilt skillet” for the district’s kitchen. This equipment will enable the kitchen staff to be more efficient in the preparation of school meals.

Tom Henschen, member Kiwanis Club of Manitou Springs, recently applied for a grant from the Rocky Mountain District Kiwanis Foundation. The grant was approved as a partial matching grant.

The grant comes from the Kiwanis Club of Manitou Springs ($750.00) and the Rocky Mountain District Kiwanis Foundation ($2500.00), for a total of $3250.00.

During the Kiwanis Club of Manitou Springs’ regular Monday evening meeting, January 26th, 2015, a check for $3250.00 was presented to Ms. Pat Urban, representing the Manitou Springs School District 14. Ms. Urban is the director of instructional and special programs. The check was presented by Ms. Marti Walker, board member of the Rocky Mountain District Kiwanis Foundation, and Garry Garrison, Kiwanis Club of Manitou Springs president.

Kiwanis International is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child at a time. It is one of the largest community-service organizations in the world dedicated primarily to helping the children of the world. Kiwanis International serves children and communities worldwide with nearly 597,500 adult and youth members in more than 80 nations.

The Rocky Mountain District of Kiwanis consists of 3,023 members serving in 97 clubs located in 18 divisions throughout the states of Colorado, Wyoming, the panhandle of Nebraska and northern New Mexico.

Locally the Kiwanis Club of Manitou Springs has a foundation that is exclusively dedicated to awarding annual scholarships to Manitou Springs High School graduates. During the 2013/2014 school year the foundation awarded 7 scholarships with a total value of $17,500.00. The club hosts many local activities such as the annual Breakfast with Santa, provide the evening meals for the Pikes Peak Assent and Marathon, host A Huck Finn Day at Shriver Park, Easter Egg Hunt, along with a number of other activities focused on the Manitou Springs community and its welfare.

The Kiwanis Club of Manitou Springs was chartered May 7th, 1921 and has continuously operated locally for 94 years, while Kiwanis International is celebrating its 100th birthday this year.
